In a survey of 1000 mums by Bold 2in1, 62% said they regularly feel restless and unable to relax, with an astonishing 49% saying they have themselves have experienced stress-induced 'temper tantrums' and 83% of mums likening their lifestyle to a 'white knuckle' roller coaster ride.
Psychologist and mum, Dr Linda Papadopolous says that unrealistic pressures on today's mum have led to a renewed sense of stress, creating this 'motor mum' syndrome.
Linda says, “Mums are under constant pressure to perform and feel guilty about relaxing.. 1 in 4 of our mums said that they spend a mere 10 minutes a day focussing on themselves. It's so important for mums to carve out that all-important me-time in order to maintain a cool balance that will ultimately help them to tackle the pressures of motherhood with a clearer head.”
Recognising, that it can be hard for the modern day mum to find the time to treat herself, these top tips are designed to help de-stress and make the most of simple everyday experiences.
Close your eyes
Mums constantly have to eat on the go, find the time to indulge in your favourite food, taste it with your eyes closed to heighten the experience and enjoy the moment to yourself.
Learn to relax
You can condition your sense of smell to relax yourself. In the evenings slip into a luxurious set of nightwear that makes you feel special, curl up in bed, choose your favourite essential oil and fill the room with this aroma. Your body will “learn” to relax to this smell which you can then carry around with you and use as required.
Water takes away
Use that special time you have once the kids have gone to bed to draw yourself a relaxing bath, fill the room with scented candles and turn off the lights. and try to keep all the sensory information matching. Use a soothing bath oil with a delicious smell and let the stress flow from your body.
Enjoy your dreams
If you don't get to sleep the 8 hours that you would like to, you can make the hours that you do sleep work harder for you. Wind down your mind and body by lowering the lights during the evening. Avoid central lighting, use lamps and candles around the room and reduce your stress levels by half for a peaceful nights sleep.
