The thought of tidying a child's bedroom can be a daunting one. It's amazing how one small person can accumulate so many possessions, and be happy to leave them to gather dust as they move on to the next big thing.
Now is the perfect time of year, before Santa delivers yet more goodies to add to the clutter, to get to grips with all that mess and have a proper clear out. It can seem an overwhelming task; so follow our guide to refresh your child's bedroom with the minimum of fuss and the maximum results!
- Young children can find it hard to part with toys, even if they are broken. You may find it easier to start tidying when they are at school or nursery and get them involved once you've got rid of things you know they'll never use again – whether you throw them away or pass them on to a charity shop.
- Sort toys by type – cars, action heroes, dolls, pencils and pens – and store in brightly coloured boxes or bins. Avoid boxes that are too big – which tend to get completely emptied on to the floor in a bid to find a lost ball!
- Label boxes, or for younger children stick on a photograph of a matching toy to help them identify where their toys are – and hopefully put them back!
- Encourage your children to help with the tidying. It will help them gain a sense of responsibility and make them feel they are involved in the decision-making.
- Hang a plastic shoe tidy on the back of their bedroom door. It's another useful way of storing small items together such as marbles.
- Try and arrange their wardrobes with hanging rods fixed further down the inside, so their clothes are within easy reach. Hooks to hang clothes should also be easily accessible if you want your children to start using them rather than the floor!
- Go through your children's clothes at least twice a year. You don't want to miss the opportunity to pass them down to your younger children while they fester away in the back of a drawer.
- Give the clothes you keep a new lease of life by washing them in Bold 2in1 Spa Minerals to give them a light, airy smell and make them beautifully soft to touch.
Now you can actually see the floor again, you'll be able to tread safely to the end of their beds to fill up their sacks on Christmas Eve without stepping on a talking Dalek, waking the household and revealing Santa's true identity!
