Create a comfort zone

Baby, it’s cold outside. Here’s how to give your home a warm heart

You are now entering a comfort zone

Add warmth to every corner of your home...

In the living room...
Mellow yellow is instantly mood-boosting and very on-trend right now. Use it as a natural, warming accent colour. Don’t think dazzling yellow, but the shade of a boiled egg yolk... it looks especially beautiful used in leather. Add a scattering of yellow cushions to a dull sofa, a single armchair in yellow or a leather-covered footstool.

Try new Febreze Light & Refresh candles for instant feel-good effect: as well as shedding a soft, warm glow, each candle has a unique core which releases powerful odour eliminators as it burns. And, while zapping old odours, they fill the room with a light, refreshing scent for up to 30 hours. Try new Apple Spice fragrance for heartwarming effect.

Weather-beaten stormy purples and dusky damsons are good colour choices for light shades. They create a warm glow and look great on a wooden lamp base.

Give one wall the Midas Touch. Rag-roll gold paint over matt emulsion for a rich, burnished effect.

In the kitchen...
Delicious browns have a foodie twist this season and are rich and soothing: look out for bitter stout, cinnamon and caramel. For a fast update, paint one wall in your kitchen a deep chocolate.

Add a splash of colour with a beautiful ceramic yellow salad or fruit bowl, or a tea tray that you love. You will also find this mellow yellow is amazing with sage green glass. A beautiful combo.

Invest in a bread machine, and fill your home with warm, cosy scents every morning. Check on your local Freecycle website before you buy new.

Splash out on bright, cheerful tea towels from To Dry For (www.todryfor.co.uk) – good enough to frame as decorative pictures.

In the bathroom...
Add wooden accessories to your bathroom to soften a clinical look.

Have a pile of fluffy warm towels always at the ready. Install a heated towel rail for your bathroom wall.

Introduce a touch of naughty cerise into a serene white bathroom: a deep pink bathmat, or a cushion on a bathroom chair.

If you are re-laying a bathroom floor consider underfloor heating, which has come down in price recently, and yet still feels wonderfully luxurious.

In the bedroom...
Decorate cool-coloured plain walls with decadent wall stickers for a quick weekend update – they look like skilled stencilling. Try Pedlars (www.pedlars.co.uk; tel: 01330 850 400) for a range of funky flowers and delicate lacy designs.

Create a cosy corner with a fabric-covered room divider. Try ready-to-cover screens from The Dormy House (www.thedormyhouse.com; tel: 01264 365808).

In the hallway...
Have a Heritage moment and paint your front door a Guinness-inspired rich, dark brown. Looks beautiful with vintage brass door furniture.

Guard against draughts: put vinyl strips round the edges of doors. Seal the bottom of external doors with a draught excluder. Squeeze clear flexible sealant between the floorboards and the skirting. For older-style windows get secondary glazing kits.

In a hallway with lots of wood and wicker and natural textures take a plain white wall... and paint it cerise. The rich, vibrant effect will be amazing. If you’re not bold enough to commit to a whole wall then try an alcove or perhaps paint cube-style box shelves fixed up at intervals along a wall.

Hardwearing herringbone seagrass has a rustic, warming effect for chilly hallways. Striped sisal is brilliant for stairs because it leads the eye upwards.
