So much of what we do today is focussed on what we see or hear. Whether we're watching television, working on a computer or playing state of the art games, sight has become a heightened sense in modern life. But it's important not to lose touch with our other senses.
Touch is central to our sense of well being and it's important to appreciate and utilize this essential sense as much as possible. Right from when we are very young touch is part of our every day life and it is extremely important for emotional attachment between parent and child. Just think about the beauty of a new-born's skin. It's irresistible to any mum and helps her make regular physical contact with her baby. Touch is at the heart of the child-mother relationship and in certain cultures, like the Eskimos, for instance, the baby is carried naked against the middle of the mother's back where she can anticipate all her babies needs based on the contact she has with her infant.
Stroking a family pet is also said to be hugely beneficial too and some medical studies have claimed that owning a pet is good for your heart, lowering heart rate and blood pressure. One animal charity even loan out cats and dogs that are known to have lovely temperaments to share with people who may benefit from touching and stroking their soft fur for a short while - perhaps an elderly person who cannot get out and about much or a young child who has been ill for some time. One reason pets raise the spirits is that when we touch them they nuzzle back.
Being kind to others and to your self through touch is important then. If an elderly person goes to take your arm it may be as much to do with enjoying the sense of physical closeness of another person as it is their sense that they might fall. A hug, pat on the shoulder or holding their hand can bring great comfort - how many times has someone giving you a hug made the world of difference to your day?
You can help your family too by washing their clothes in new Bold 2 in 1 which is formulated to make your wash softer. Who can resist a freshly washed, soft towel, or a silky soft t-shirt pulled on at the beginning of the day? They'll really begin to notice the difference and you may even get a few hugs of thanks into the bargain!
And don't forget to treat yourself every now and then. Just the pleasure of having your hair washed at the hairdressers can be comforting, but if you really want to splash out, why not try a massage? Just feel those aches and pains and all that tension begin to melt away and give your self a boost for the week ahead.
