1. Enjoy a good breakfast Your body's a bit like a mobile phone - it needs recharging regularly. Eating breakfast will help stop your energy stores - your blood sugar - from dipping during the morning. Good choices are a boiled egg and toast, a banana smoothie, or a bowl of porridge.
2. Drink more water Dehydration is a common cause of lethargy. Why not make a habit of having a mug of hot water with lemon juice and honey first thing? A gentle kick start to your day that's also rather tasty. Avoid water-sapping caffeine. Or if you can't part with your coffee, drink an extra cup or two of water to compensate. Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day should put a spring in your step. Think of it flushing out all those toxins and other nasties each time you reach for a glass.
3. Eat the right fats Cut out the saturated sort and stock up on the good Omega oils found in fish, nuts and avocado. "A balance of Omega 3, 6 and 9 will improve your skin, hair, brain power and energy levels," promises Rosie Hayward, founder of The Groovy Food Company.
4. Get moving Regular exercise increases energy levels by releasing the feel-good hormone serotonin. The more you exercise, the more serotonin you make. It also speeds up your metabolism - the process by which energy is produced through burning calories. "Your metabolism remains elevated well after a work out, so you'll feel livelier for most of the day, "says fitness trainer Kristoph Thompson, www.kristoph.co.uk. Exercise outside whenever you can. Natural daylight is a great mood booster.
5. Take time out All that running around and doing for others can be exhausting. Try putting yourself first. Start small by taking time out for yourself every day to sit still or take a walk. The more balanced you are emotionally, the better able you are to give to family and friends. |
